Northern lights over a snowy mountain and coastal water in Norway

The Arctic · Through my lens

Some nights are worth staying out for.

Northern lights above a snowy mountain in Norway. It is one glimpse of the north, not a promise of what every night will bring. The landscapes beneath the sky are just as much a part of the journey.

The journey, in detail

The journey

Norway's coast, Svalbard and Finnish Lapland offer three very different ways to experience the north. Your interests and the season help us choose the right region.

Season
Winter darkness or northern summer
Suggested duration
Around 5 to 10 days

Wild landscapes, changing light and time outdoors

Journey ideas

Ways to shape
your journey.

01 · Northern Norway

Tromsø and the coast

Use Tromsø as the starting point, then look beyond the city to the coast, fjords and mountains. Keep the plan flexible enough for northern weather.

02 · Svalbard

Farther into the Arctic

Svalbard deserves a journey of its own. Start in Longyearbyen, then explore with experienced local guides who plan each outing around the season and conditions.

03 · Finnish Lapland

Rovaniemi and the forests

Rovaniemi can serve as a base for exploring Finnish Lapland. We choose your stay and activities around the season and how you want to experience the region.

The point on the globe marks Tromsø as a reference for the region. Your journey can focus on northern Norway, Svalbard or Finnish Lapland, with the arrival airport chosen to suit the route.

What to expect

What the days
can look like.

01

Start with the season

Winter and summer offer very different experiences. We start with what you want to see and do, then choose the region and travel dates to suit.

02

Nature decides

No one can promise northern lights or wildlife. We plan a trip you can enjoy for its landscapes and activities, with any wildlife or aurora sighting as a bonus.

03

One region may be enough

You do not need to force all three places into one trip. We combine them only when the travel time, budget and season make sense.

Planning questions

Before you
decide.

When can you see the northern lights?
In northern Norway and Finnish Lapland the dark season runs roughly from September to March. You need clear skies as well as darkness, so a few nights in one place give you a better chance. Sightings are never guaranteed.
Can you see polar bears in Svalbard?
Polar bears live across Svalbard, and sightings are most likely on summer expedition cruises around the islands. They are never guaranteed, and outside Longyearbyen trips go with guides trained for polar bear safety.
How do you get to the Arctic?
Tromsø and Longyearbyen are usually reached through Oslo, and Rovaniemi through Helsinki, with some direct flights in season. Svalbard has midnight sun from late April to late August and polar night from mid-November to late January.
How does planning with STARS & ROADS work?
You tell us your dates, interests, budget and preferred pace, and Reem replies personally. We confirm the scope and fee before any work begins, then build a route with places to stay and experiences around you. You can choose the itinerary design on its own, or ask us to handle the bookings as well.
